I recently acquired [gleefully picked up along with about 25 other copies of various journals off the freebie table at the Indiana University Writers’ Conference] a copy of Descant 129 (the Summer 2005 “To See Venice is to Live” issue). As a fiction writer and reader, it held little for me (no fiction), but as a traveler it was great. I’ve never been to Venice, but apparently I’ve been missing out. Among other things, the issue includes essays by the editors, a history of the courtesan in renaissance Venice, excerpts “From a Watercolourist’s Sketchbook” by Peter Selgin (a fine fiction writer, and the only name I recognized in the magazine), translations of Italian poetry, as well as English poetry about Venice. I’m thinking a trip to Italy is in order. And I can take this issue along.
