Happy Anniversary to Press 53!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Greensboro, NC, to participate in a group reading in celebration of Press 53’s 12th anniversary, part of a month-long series of celebratory events. Greensboro’s downtown has undergone a renaissance in recent years and is filled with interesting shops and restaurants. It’s also home to the International Civil Rights Center, which I didn’t have time to visit on this trip, and the fabulous Scuppernong Books, where our reading was held.

Kevin Morgan Watson, the force behind Press 53, talked a little about his experience in running the press and how it has grown from humble beginnings. We then heard from several of the press’s authors: Adrian Rice (whose wife, Molly, not a Press 53 author, also read), Joe Mills, Maura Way, John Thomas York, Steve Mitchell (co-owner of Scuppernong), Wendy J. Fox (who flew in from Denver for the reading), and me.

It was a fun event to be part of, and the press has been an important part of my writing life since the publication of my first story collection, In an Uncharted Country, in 2009. Thank you to Kevin and Press 53 for all you do for emerging writers!
