>I don’t think I’ve weighed in yet on the James Frey affair, but now that there has been a “settlement” with the publisher of his A Million Little Pieces I can’t help myself. This is the “memoir” that was exposed as being considerably less than truthful, and the settlement allows owners of the book to recover the purchase price by ripping out page 163 of the hardback or the front cover of the paperback and mailing it in (along with a sworn statement that the purchased the book thinking it was a memoir). This is nuts. Thousands of people are going to claim the refund. And they’re going to lie in order to do it. So who is defrauding whom? I don’t care that Frey’s book was somewhat/mostly/entirely fabricated! This is bad, bad precedent.
