Literary Magazine Ranking — Non-Fiction

Rationale for the rankings. Years ago, when I was first submitting short stories to literary magazines, I wanted a way to tier my submissions. I believe in simultaneous submissions, but I didn’t want to submit a story to a great magazine and a not-so-great magazine at the same time because of the risk of multiple acceptances. (If the not-so-great magazine accepted first, it would pain me to withdraw the story from the great magazine.) Developing a ranking of literary magazines allowed me to submit only to those magazines in roughly the same tier. I began sharing the list on my blog because I knew other writers used the same tiered approach to submissions. Eventually, I added poetry and non-fiction rankings and also links to magazine websites.

Basis for the rankings. I base the rankings on the annual Pushcart Prize anthology that comes out in November. That anthology includes fiction, poetry, and non-fiction and excludes the magazines of general circulation like The New Yorker, Atlantic, Harper’s, and so on. Other anthologies, like the Best American series and the O.Henry Prize Stories are excellent books, but their approach to assembling their winners is different. As these things go, the Pushcart Prize anthology draws from a wide range of nominating magazines, which makes it the best choice for these rankings. One criticism of the Pushcart Prizes is that they have a print-publication bias. Although there are an increasing number of online publications earning recognition in the anthology, that bias is probably real. There are some fine online magazines that won’t appear on these lists, unfortunately.

Methodology.  After several years of making these lists, I made a change last year that I have retained. Originally, I based the rankings on a ten-year rolling score that assigned a constant value for Pushcart Prizes earned over that period and a lower value for Special Mentions. Some readers suggested that a five-year rolling score would be better because it would result in newer publications rising in the rankings sooner. But reputations take years to develop, and I didn’t like the shorter period, while acknowledging the validity of the point. So last year I compromised. Now the formula assigns one value for Prizes and Special Mentions received in the most recent five years and half that value for Prizes received in the preceding five years.

Symbols. You’ll notice a few symbols next to the names of some magazines on the lists. (c) indicates a closed magazine; (w) indicates a broken link for a live magazine; and (?) indicates some question about the magazine or an unknown link.

Feedback and Support. I welcome your feedback. Let me know if you find a broken or incorrect link, either by leaving a comment or contacting me through this website. I don’t mind hearing criticism of my approach, either, if that’s what you want to share. (Praise is also welcome.) And if you find the lists at all useful, please consider making a donation to support the site. You’ll find a Donation button above and on each of the ranking pages.

VCCA Residency

After a busy election week–with mostly favorable results, from my point of view–I have now retreated to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, an arts colony near Amherst, Virginia. I have been here many times before, and it is always a wonderful experience.

There are about 25 artists in residence at the moment–writers, visual artists, and composers. On Friday night one of the writers read from her work-in-progress (we had a group of high school creative writers visiting for the evening) and last night a composer talked about his work and played a recording of two recent compositions. Whatever is happening in my own work, I find being surrounded by these other creative people to be inspiring.

I spent all day yesterday working on the update to my Perpetual Folly Literary Magazine Rankings, which will be published tomorrow. I don’t remember it being quite so much work in previous years, but I had to replace a lot of broken links, and that took time. I know people appreciate the lists (rankings in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry), so I’m happy to do it.

Today, though, I’ll be able to open my novel file and get back to work on that–the real reason I’m here. Best of luck to me.

A Day Off . . . to protect the vote

I usually write every day (although I may shake things up a little on the weekend and put my current project aside to work on something else). To my mind, that’s the best way of reaching my writing goals.

But today, Tuesday, November 7, I will not be writing. Instead, I’ll be working to make sure that the election in my county is carried out fairly and honestly.

I am Vice-Chair of my county’s 3-member Electoral Board. In Virginia, where we have a general election every year, plus primaries most years, this is a nearly constant effort to keep the election machinery running smoothly. This year, we acquired new paper-based optical scan voting machines and spent the early part of the year training election officers and the public in their use. In June we had a primary for statewide offices, and now we are electing the Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, plus a number of other offices including representatives to our state legislature.

A big part of my job is recruiting local citizens to work with us as officers of election, the folks who sit at the polling place all day to check voters in, give them their ballots, and operate the machines that tally the votes. We then have to train those officers in the use of the machines and also in the procedures they must follow on election day.

Then, on election day, our Electoral Board is on duty all day, from 5:00 am when our election officers have to show up at their polling places until the polls close, the votes are counted, and the voting machines safely returned to us. If there are no technical problems, polls will open at 6:00 am, and shortly after that my Board colleagues and I will hit the road to visit all 26 of our polling places. (We divide our large county into thirds, so I’ll be driving about 160 miles to visit 8 polling places, spending up to an hour at each.) While there, we check to be sure things are running smoothly, talk to voters and election officers to get feedback about the process, and generally ensure that everyone is happy. We return to the office shortly before the polls close at 7:00 pm, gather results by telephone from the polling places, and then wait for the voting equipment to be returned. Tomorrow, Wednesday, the three of us will gather again to go over the printed results from the machines before certifying the election to our State Board of Elections.

So there will be no writing today, and probably none tomorrow. But this is important work, and I’m happy to do it.

Reading Submissions: International Stories Wanted

Submissions have been open for about a month for Volume III of Everywhere Stories: Short Fiction from a Small Planet and I’ve begun reading. The Submission Guidelines list the countries we’ve already covered in the first two volumes. So far, most writers have followed the guidelines and haven’t sent us stories set in countries we’ve already done. I’m grateful for that.

We do plan to do another US story in this volume, so those are welcome, but I’m surprised by how many stories I’m getting that are set in the United States. It’s going to be tough to choose the best story from among those. I’d love to see more stories set in other countries, and those will have a much better chance of getting selected for the anthology.

The deadline to submit is November 30, 2017, so check the Guidelines and send us something!

Happy Anniversary to Press 53!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Greensboro, NC, to participate in a group reading in celebration of Press 53’s 12th anniversary, part of a month-long series of celebratory events. Greensboro’s downtown has undergone a renaissance in recent years and is filled with interesting shops and restaurants. It’s also home to the International Civil Rights Center, which I didn’t have time to visit on this trip, and the fabulous Scuppernong Books, where our reading was held.

Kevin Morgan Watson, the force behind Press 53, talked a little about his experience in running the press and how it has grown from humble beginnings. We then heard from several of the press’s authors: Adrian Rice (whose wife, Molly, not a Press 53 author, also read), Joe Mills, Maura Way, John Thomas York, Steve Mitchell (co-owner of Scuppernong), Wendy J. Fox (who flew in from Denver for the reading), and me.

It was a fun event to be part of, and the press has been an important part of my writing life since the publication of my first story collection, In an Uncharted Country, in 2009. Thank you to Kevin and Press 53 for all you do for emerging writers!

Tips for Writers: Chaise Longue

The main character in my novel in progress is at a hotel and goes to the pool where she reclines in a . . . chaise longue. Longue, you ask? What the heck is that?

Too often, I see the term “chaise lounge” used in place of the correct form, “chaise longue” (plural: chaise longues).

Here’s what Garner’s Modern English Usage has to say on the subject: “Many people commit the embarrassing error of saying or writing ‘chaise lounge.’ The problem is that ‘lounge,’ when put after ‘chaise,’ looks distinctly low-rent.”

The correct form, “chaise longue,” is French, meaning “long chair.” The incorrect form is so common, however, that it may eventually be accepted. Not yet, though, at least not in my book.

Coming Soon: 2018 Perpetual Folly Literary Magazine Rankings

It’s that time of year again. I should be receiving the new Pushcart Prize anthology in about one week, and shortly thereafter I’ll be able to post the updated literary magazine rankings.

As followers of the rankings know, I use the prizes and special mentions received by magazines over a ten-year period to calculate ratings that I then turn into a list of magazines in each of three genres: fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The purpose of ranking magazines in this way is to help writers determine where to submit work. I’ve been doing this for over ten years, and constantly hear from people that they find the rankings very useful.

If you aren’t familiar with the rankings, check out the 2017 lists here.
