When I was in grad school at IU in the late ’70s, I took a Chaucer class from E.T. Donaldson, one of the country’s premier Chaucer scholars at that time. I knew nothing–not having been an English major undergrad and certainly never having studied the period. But Donaldson was fabulous. He basically channeled Chaucer and each day he would read from the volume of Chaucer’s works that Donaldson himself had edited, and along the way educate us on Middle English pronunciation and vocabulary. When it came time for my Masters Comprehensive Exams (in lieu of the thesis, which I’d still be working on if I’d chosen to go that route) I nailed the Chaucer question, thanks to E.T.
