I am the author of three novels--THE LAST BIRD OF PARADISE, OLIVER'S TRAVELS, and THE SHAMAN OF TURTLE VALLEY--and three story collections--IN AN UNCHARTED COUNTRY, HOUSE OF THE ANCIENTS AND OTHER STORIES, and WHAT THE ZHANG BOYS KNOW, winner of the Library of Virginia Literary Award for Fiction. I am also the co-founder and former editor of Prime Number Magazine and the editor of the award-winning anthology series EVERYWHERE STORIES: SHORT FICTION FROM A SMALL PLANET.

  1. Thanks for the great post. I have been working on a novel for NANO and I had another version of the Three-Act Structure I have been using, but this one has a little more detail. I never liked the idea of using a structure like this, but I am actually finding it very helpful.

    1. No, I didn’t create this model. I’ve seen it attributed to Syd Field, but I don’t know if that’s the diagram itself or just the concept.
