Note: the 2015 Rankings for Nonfiction are now available. Go here.
I now have the pleasure to present the 2014 Pushcart Prize Literary Magazine Ranking for Nonfiction. For comparison purposes, you can see the 2013 Ranking here.
The 2014 Ranking for Fiction is here. (And that’s the place also to read about my methodology.)
The 2014 Ranking for Poetry is here.
What do we learn from this year’s list? Not a lot. Georgia Review retains its lead, but The Sun leaps up in the ranking as does Ploughshares.

2014 Pushcart Prize Literary Magazine Ranking — Nonfiction
I am confused – what do the numbers to the right mean if the numbers on the left are the ranking/score?
The numbers on the left are the ranking. The numbers on the right are the score.
I am intrigued by this and curious what your scoring system is. How do you measure these against one another?
I’ve explained the methodology here: http://cliffordgarstang.com/?p=4316
Basically, I use a simple formula that awards points for Pushcart Prizes and Special Mentions received over a rolling ten-year period. The accumulated points determines the ranking.
How do you determine prizes received? And what is a mention?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge, and thank you for your work.
Regards.
Have you not heard of the Pushcart Prize? Every year, the Pushcart Press takes nominations for work (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry) that has appeared in literary magazines and small press publications. They publish an anthology in November that includes the winners of the Pushcart Prizes. At the back of the book they also recognize other stories, essays, and poems worthy of “Special Mention.” My ranking is based solely on these prizes and special mentions awarded over a ten-year period.
I have heard of the Pushcart Prize, of course. I understand your process now. Thanks for your time.
